Come learn about the power of gospel music as a tool for resistance, resilience, and empowerment. This event will explore gospel music as history, tracing its roots and evolution; as cultural practice, examining its role in community and tradition; and as liberation, highlighting its power to inspire hope and social change. Come sing on Wednesday and Thursday or just come out to the final night for the festival of music on Friday!
The 3rd Annual Gospel Fest Workshop and Performance at Memorial Church will be led by Rev. Dr. Jason Thompson (PhD, Northwestern University).
Jason Thompson (PhD, Northwestern University) is pastor of Sacramento’s St. Andrews AME Church, the oldest historically Black congregation on the West Coast, and an inaugural faculty member of the new Black Honors College at California State University, Sacramento. He has been involved in gospel music since childhood and now teaches and conducts research on the diverse forms and cultural significance of Black gospel music. His work explores the historical and contemporary connections between gospel music and social justice movements, and the ways gospel music can be used to promote social change and empower marginalized communities.
All are welcome! Come make a joyful noise!
