• "Attempting and Maintaining Plant-Forward Diets: Learnings from Two Experience-sampling Studies”

Dr. Jared Piazza will discuss findings from two studies: one that examined the efficacy of pledging for encouraging transitions to plant-forward eating, and another that examined the social context of individuals’ efforts to maintain a plant-forward transition. The first study used an experimental design to track omnivores from 3 countries as they attempted to eat meat-free for 28 days. The second study explored the social environment and diet-related interactions of plant-forward eaters across two weeks of experience sampling. Both studies yielded important insights into plant-forward eating that underscore the different challenges faced at early vs. later stages of behavioural change.

A Senior Lecturer in Social Psychology at Lancaster University in the UK, Dr. Piazza’s research focuses on people’s moral decision-making as it relates to other people, animals, and food. Jared completed his PhD in cognitive science at the Institute of Cognition and Culture at Queen’s University Belfast. He co-founded the Society for the Psychology of Human-Animal Intergroup Relations (PHAIR), is an Associate Editor for the PHAIR Journal, and has worked as a research consultant with various organisations and animal-interest groups. His research has been published in journals such as Appetite, Cognition, and Trends in Cognitive Sciences.
