Learn the basics of using a GIS

Event Details:

Learn the fundamental concepts and skills needed to begin using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software for the exploration and analysis of spatial data using the open source GIS package QGIS.

  • What is a GIS?
  • Spatial Data Models and Formats
  • Projections and Coordinate Systems
  • Basic Data Management
  • The QGIS User Interface
  • Basic spatial analysis
  • Selections, Joins, and Querries.
  • Basic map layout and exports

Required: You will need a fully charged laptop to participate in the hands-on exercises. A mouse is not required but strongly recommended.

Note: This workshop is open to current Stanford affiliates only. You must have a valid SUnetID to attend. A current Stanford ID is required to enter the library.
