Please join us for an event celebrating the release of Professor Keith Baker's new book, Jean-Paul Marat: Prophet of Terror.
Event Description
Professor Keith Baker is the author of numerous books and essays on the French Revolution and the Eighteenth Century, including Inventing the French Revolution : Essays on French Political Culture in the Eighteenth Century (Cambridge University Press 1990) and Condorcet : From Natural Philosophy to Social Mathematics (University of Chicago Press, 1975).
This event will focus on his newest book, Jean-Paul Marat: Prophet of Terror, an authoritative biography of Jean-Paul Marat (1743–93). Decades in the making, this monumental work takes readers on a journey through the intriguing, sometimes shocking life of this writer and thinker.
Far beyond a standard rendering of Marat’s life and its milestones, this biography offers readers an opportunity to see the French Revolution as never before, through the perspective of one of its major figures. Baker’s book reveals how someone like Marat could go from challenging Newton and engaging with Franklin to calling for an ever-growing number of heads to roll—a transformation as chilling as ever.
