DESCRIPTION:Join us on Monday\, November 14\, 2022\, when Avi Goldfarb from
the University of Toronto joins us to share his research.\n\nJoin us for
lunch starting at 11:45am\, with talk to follow 12-1pm. \n\nAbstract: Arti
ficial intelligence presents an extraordinary opportunity and an extraordi
nary threat. But not in the way that might be expected. Today’s AI is be
st understood as prediction technology rather than a machine that can do e
verything humans do. Prediction technology can nevertheless transform indu
stries. It does this by decoupling prediction from the other aspects of de
cision-making\, thereby enabling new ways of delivering value. Unleashing
this potential requires the invention of new ways of operating\, many of w
hich remain undiscovered. Today\, we sit in a striking phase in the develo
pment of this technology\, The Between Times after witnessing AI’s poten
tial\, but before its widespread impact. On the other side of The Between
Times\, when this process of invention is complete\, the changes in decisi
ons will mean changes in power. In industry\, power confers profits\; in s
 ociety\, power confers control.
