Managing people is one of the most important yet challenging aspects of any job. In this three-part series, we will provide participants with practical skills focusing on three aspects. First will be how to hire (and be hired by!) the right people - what to look for and how to interview to find it! Then, we will move on to how to set clear expectations which is a crucial foundation in any work environment. Last, we will spend considerable time on how to deliver feedback for change and continuation. Although the emphasis will be on managing “down” (i.e., serving in the role of manager), we will also briefly discuss managing “up” (dealing with a boss). Participants will practice on each other so when the time comes, you’ll be well prepared. Whether your need is today and how to be an effective manager of a summer undergrad, or more future-looking when you might be managing an entire team, this three-part series is for you.

Workshops are designed and led by:  John Boothroyd, associate vice provost for graduate education and postdoctoral affairs, professor, microbiology and immunology.

Details:

Open to enrolled graduate students at any stage in any discipline or degree program. Postdocs will be accepted if space is available, but priority is given to graduate students.

Management Matters is an in-person, three-part workshop. Session dates are Tuesday, Feb 20, Tuesday, Feb 27, and Tuesday Mar 5, from 4:00-6:30PM. Space is limited. Due to the workshop's interactive format, full participation in all three sessions is required. Dinner will be served.

If you are accepted to this workshop, you must confirm your place by submitting a Student Participation Fee Agreement, which authorizes VPGE to charge $50 to your Stanford bill – only if you do not fully participate in the event. You will receive a link to the Agreement and instructions if you are offered a place.
