DESCRIPTION:This event has been canceled.\n\nManaging people is one of the
most important yet challenging aspects of any job. In this three-part seri
es\, we will provide participants with practical skills focusing on three
aspects. First will be how to hire (and be hired by!) the right people - w
hat to look for and how to interview to find it! Then\, we will move on to
how to set clear expectations which is a crucial foundation in any work e
nvironment. Last\, we will spend considerable time on how to deliver feedb
ack for change and continuation. Although the emphasis will be on managing
“down” (i.e.\, serving in the role of manager)\, we will also briefly
discuss managing “up” (dealing with a boss). Participants will practi
ce on each other so when the time comes\, you’ll be well prepared. Wheth
er your need is today and how to be an effective manager of a summer under
grad\, or more future-looking when you might be managing an entire team\,
this three-part series is for you.\n\nWorkshops are designed and led by:
John Boothroyd\, associate vice provost for graduate education and postdoc
 toral affairs\, professor\, microbiology and immunology.\n\nDetails:\n\nOp
en to enrolled graduate students at any stage in any discipline or degree
program. Postdocs will be accepted if space is available\, but priority is
given to graduate students.\n\nManagement Matters is an in-person\, three
-part workshop. Session dates are Tuesday\, Feb 20\, Tuesday\, Feb 27\, an
