This reading session will be an introduction to our yearly theme: Metabolism and the (Non) Human. As the framing suggests, we will examine a notion that closely associates energy and the body –metabolism– taking into consideration both human and non-human corpora at different scales, deriving inspiration from Marx’s concept of “metabolic rift”.

We will read a selection that includes excerpts from Marx's Grundrisse, John Bellamy Foster’s introduction to The Ecological Rift, Hannah Landecker’s “The Food of Our Food,” and Oswald de Andrade’s Manifesto Antropófago. Our aim is to situate the questions surrounding the difference between humanist approaches to the body and materialist ones; and metabolization as a cultural and political process that demands attention.
