Event Details:
Please join us for a Methods Café between Margaret Cohen and Mark Greif on Cohen's The Sentimental Education of the Novel (2002). The discussion will encompass sentimental fiction, reading forgotten literature, Bourdieu's theory of the literary field, and the relation of the archive to theory.
Methods Café is a new dialogue series in the English Department that will pair up faculty and faculty or faculty and graduate students in a conversation about literary theory. Primary texts will be chosen to exemplify relevant theoretical models.
One variation will bring together two conversationalists who will apply the theoretical model in a published book or other work to an analysis of the primary text, from their own viewpoints. The other variation will center on one conversationalist asking another to explain the salience of a given work of literary theory and how it has had an impact on their thinking.
