DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special seminar presented by Ermias Kebrea
b\, Ph.D. The seminar will help build the research community in Nature-Bas
ed Climate Solutions in the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability.\n\n \
 n\nErmias Kebreab\, Ph.D.\n\nProfessor\n\nAssociate Dean for Global Engage
ment\, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences\n\nDirector\, Wo
 rld Food Center\n\nUC Davis\n\n\nTuesday\, February 13\n\n2:00 – 3:30 PM
 \n\nHartley Conference Room\n\n \n\n \n\nIntegrating Nature-Based Solution
s in the Food System for Climate Mitigation\n\n \n\nThe growing urgency of
climate change necessitates innovative and sustainable approaches in key
sectors\, particularly our food system. It's essential to systematically e
xplore how nature-based solutions can be integrated as a strategic respons
e to this challenge. Presently\, we are exceeding planetary boundaries for
several key environmental factors\, highlighting the dire need for sustai
nable changes in food production and distribution. Significantly\, the agr
icultural sector\, especially methane emissions from livestock\, contribut
es to global greenhouse gas emissions. Although animal-based foods have a
larger environmental footprint\, a nuanced understanding of the entire foo
d system is crucial for addressing these challenges effectively. Various i
nterventions and innovations are being developed to reduce methane emissio
ns and enhance agricultural practices. Targeting nature-based solutions is
vital\, especially in low-income countries where balancing increased food
production with environmental conservation is challenging. Evaluating the
effectiveness of these interventions through life cycle assessments offer
s a comprehensive understanding of their environmental impacts and benefit
 s. By aligning agricultural practices with the goals of the Paris Agreemen
t\, we can demonstrate the transformative power of nature-based solutions
in steering the global food system towards a more sustainable and climate-
 resilient future.
