The Narratives of Violence and Resistance in Latin America Working Group welcomes the upcoming 2-day workshop where Mexican artist Fabiola Rayas and participate in the intervention of her textile piece which aims to name the more than 140,000 forcibly dissapeard in Mexico.
Created through the creative process of artist Fabiola Rayas, Bordarles a todxs (Nombrarles a todxs)—Embroidering Everyone (Naming Everyone)—is a textile piece that seeks to name the more than 140,000 disappeared persons in Mexico, as well as address grave human rights violations.
Using information of the disappeared, gathered from their families, textile banners are constructed and artistically modified through various techniques: painting, embroidery, printmaking, or in the style of arpillera. Nombrarles a Todxs is currently traveling across the country as part of the itinerant exhibition “Caminar el cuerpo desaparecido” (Walking the Disappeared Body), which showcases a decade of work alongside families from the state of Michoacán. The piece will ultimately become part of the memory archive for the organization Familiares Caminando por Justicia.
The workshop is designed as a space for creation, reflection, and care, where textiles serve as a medium for memory and affection. In this two-part encounter, participants will learn about Fabiola Rayas’s work and contribute to a banner to name a disappeared person in Mexico.
