Long before Horkheimer and Adorno’s critique in Dialectic of Enlightenment (1944) and the advent of feminist, postcolonial, and Black Studies scholarship, “the Enlightenment” as an era and epistemological praxis was criticized for its hypocrisies, exclusions, and willful blindness.
