Event Details:

Please join us for a PATH+ talk with Peter Adamson (LMU München) entitled, "Logic, Language, and Assent in Islamic Philosophy".

This presentation will survey developments in the conception of logic
from late antiquity to post-classical Islamic philosophy. In focus is
the question of the purpose of logic and its relationship to natural
language. I argue that the early thinkers of the "Baghdad school" had an
inflationary view of logic, according to which it studies linguistic
expressions insofar as they can be used to express truth. By contrast
Ibn Sīnā (Avicenna), while agreeing that we need logic to reach
knowledge, thinks of logic in much more formal terms.

WHEN: Tuesday, March 31, 4:30PM,

WHERE: Pigott Hall (Bldg 260), Rm 216
