Building a More Inclusive and Accessible Healthcare System: The Power of Patient and Family Engagement

SESSION DESCRIPTION
Families are essential partners in shaping healthcare systems that are inclusive, equitable, and responsive to the needs of children and youth with special health care needs. This session introduces the Family Voices family engagement models, which center the lived experiences and expertise of families to drive meaningful change in healthcare policy, practice, and delivery. Participants will explore how family engagement can dismantle barriers to access, improve care coordination, and promote culturally responsive services. Through real-world examples and actionable strategies, attendees will learn how to integrate family voices into decision-making processes and build systems that reflect the values and needs of the communities they serve.

EDUCATION GOALS

• Explore the principles and practices of the Family Voices family engagement models to understand how meaningful partnerships with families can improve healthcare systems and outcomes.
• Identify barriers to inclusion and accessibility in healthcare settings, and examine how family engagement can address disparities and promote equity for children and youth with special health care needs.
• Apply strategies for integrating family voices into healthcare planning, delivery, and evaluation, empowering families as co-creators of solutions and advocates for systemic change.
