Session Description:

Using three large, recently conducted, NIH-sponsored clinical trials, evidenced-based management strategies in young children with acute otitis media (treatment, appropriate duration of treatment and management of recurrent acute otitis media) will be addressed. The session will highlight methodological similarities of these trials, stringency of diagnostic criteria and follow-up, role of nasopharyngeal colonization, as well as future research related to improved treatment options and artificial intelligence for diagnosing acute otitis media.

Education Goals:

Critically apply diagnostic and treatment principles addressed in the American Academy of Pediatrics guideline to the management of children with acute otitis media.

Incorporate epidemiologic and treatment outcome evidence from recent, NIH-sponsored, acute otitis media clinical trials to treat young children with acute otitis media.

Incorporate evidence from a recent, NIH-sponsored clinical trial to manage (medically or surgically) young children with recurrent acute otitis media.
