The Department of Pediatrics and the Division of Adolescent Medicine Presents

How the Pediatric Workforce Can Address the Nation’s Overdose Crisis

PRESENTED BY
Scott Hadland, MD, MPH, MS
Chief, Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine
Mass General for Children
Harvard Medical School

SESSION DESCRIPTION
Overdose is now the third leading cause of death in American children. From 2019 to 2021, adolescent overdose deaths more than doubled, driven by an increasingly dangerous drug supply contaminated with illicitly manufactured fentanyl. In this Grand Rounds presentation, Dr. Hadland will begin by reviewing the
epidemiology of substance use and overdose among youth in the US. Next, he will review best practices for opioid prescribing, and finally, review evidence-based screening and addiction treatment for youth with opioid use disorders.

EDUCATION GOALS

  • Describe the epidemiology of substance use-related harm in the US, with a focus on overdoses among adolescents and young adults (“youth”).
  • Prescribe opioids in a manner that reduces the likelihood of risk for long-term opioid use and addiction.
  • Ensure evidence-based screening and treatment for youth with substance use disorders.
