The Long-Term Impacts of Early Life Environments: How Social Policies from 80 Years Ago Affect Health Today

SESSION DESCRIPTION
Despite compelling evidence from biological and social studies about the importance of early life environments and health, there has been a lack of studies documenting the effects of particular policies. In this lecture I will describe work investigating the long-term health effects of one of the most impactful social policies of the 20th century, the New Deal, enacted to address the economic crisis of the Great Depression. In addition to overall impacts on health, I will present information looking at the impact of differential employment policies by race, which has implications for understanding current racial inequalities in health, with implications for current policies, as well as for the State of California’s debates on reparations.
