DESCRIPTION:Turbulent flows are usually studied from two separate perspecti
ves. The first is a global perspective in which the energy cascade and ene
rgy flux across scales are studied in spectral space. A defining feature o
f this analysis is the statistical locality of interactions among scales t
hat contribute to the energy flux in scale space. The second is the physic
ally local perspective\, most prevalent in wall-bounded turbulent flows\,
where the kinematics and dynamics of individual eddies or coherent structu
res are analyzed. In this dissertation\, we combine the coherent-structure
and scale-by-scale energy-transfer perspectives while explicitly accounti
ng for temporal dynamics. We focus primarily on the hierarchy of attached
structures in the logarithmic region of wall-bounded turbulence. The stud
y was conducted in a turbulent channel flow at a friction Reynolds number
 of 2000.
