DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nThe industrial sector generates 23% of U.S. greenho
use gas emissions. Across all industrial facilities\, emissions are produc
ed when fossil fuels are combusted to supply heat to industrial processes.
Reducing these emissions requires facility-level estimates of process hea
t demand to evaluate the technical feasibility of low-carbon heating syste
ms. This work bridges the gap between industrial heat demand characterizat
ion and energy system planning\, connecting process-level heat requirement
s to decarbonization strategies and their downstream grid-scale consequenc
es. This dissertation investigates the following: (1) the magnitude and ch
aracteristics of industrial process heat demand\, (2) the cost-effective s
ystems that reduce industrial heat emissions\, and (3) the impact of decar
bonizing industrial heat on the gas-electricity energy infrastructure. Tog
ether\, these analyses quantify heat energy demands for U.S. industry\, hi
ghlight carbon mitigation opportunities\, and chart pathways for cost-opti
mal decarbonization of industrial process heat.\n\n \n\n https://stanford.
