The Philosophy + Literature Focal Group welcomes Prof. Nir Evron (Tel Aviv University) for a workshop.
The “Great Separation,” pets, Owen Wister’s The Virginian, animal cruelty…
Owen Wister's 1902 The Virginian is often described as the first proper Western, yet unlike the midcentury Westerns to which it gave rise, Wister's novel is continuously preoccupied with the question of animal cruelty. Dr. Nir Evron's talk will explain The Virginian's anomalous relation to the genre it initiated by setting it in the context of a profound late-nineteenth-century transformation in the way Americans experienced and understood animals.
