DESCRIPTION:What exactly is dark matter and what do we know about its natur
e? Join our lecture to learn about how astronomers search for dark matter
signals near stars and planets!\n\nLocation: Hewlett Teaching Center\, Roo
 m 200 & YouTube\n\nTitle: Dark Matter Searches with Astrophysical Objects\
n\nSpeaker: Dr. Rebecca Leane (KIPAC/SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory)
\n\nAbstract: While multiple lines of evidence suggest the existence of da
rk matter in the Universe\, the theory describing it remains completely un
known and requires new search ideas to resolve its identity. It turns out
that stars and planets can be ideal playgrounds to discover dark matter. I
n this lecture\, Dr. Rebecca Leane will review a range of dark matter sear
ches using celestial objects\, including exoplanets\, solar-system planets
\, the Sun\, and the Earth. She will discuss different search strategies\,
their opportunities and limitations\, and the interplay of regimes where
different celestial objects are optimal dark matter detectors.\n\nThis eve
nt will be offered in a hybrid format. Live stream URL can be found at the
bottom of the EventBrite registration confirmation email.
