Event Details:
As we get closer to the end of the quarter, many of you will (hopefully) be working on export maps for class projects, research work, or even journal publication.
Making a map for visual communication is not the same as making one for your own research needs. If you'd like to know how to make your GIS maps look better (and be more effective communication tools) please come to our GIS cartography workshop at the David Rumsey Map Center next Friday (Nov 17th, 9:30am - 12pm).
This workshop will cover the topics below and will focus on the example use case if making a simple map figure for journal article publication.
- Why design matters in maps
- Common GIS design issues to avoid
- Basics of a good Visual Hierarchy
- Color use best practices
- How to layout a map in QGIS (margins, alignment, legends, text, insets)
- Understanding typical journal art specifications
