DESCRIPTION:Professor Salseda will discuss Civil Society\, the three-channe
l video installation by the artist Latipa (née Michelle Dizon).\n\nCivil So
ciety explores the videotaped beating of Rodney King and footage of unrest
from the past and present. Latipa connects the 1992 Los Angeles Riots with
 the 1965 Watts Rebellion\, Hurricane Katrina\, and the 2005 French Riots. T
 hrough cuts\, montage\, conceptual soundscapes\, and voiceover\, the artist
blends together the seemingly disparate histories of unrest to highlight h
ow the experiences of anti-Blackness\, state-sanctioned violence\, and xeno
phobic rhetoric threatens the citizenship and human rights of marginalized
peoples. This beckons Professor Salseda to consider how unrest is an act of
the bereaved that makes injustice visible in the landscape-- an act\, not
just contained in a United States context\, but one that is marked by a lar
ger\, global legacy of white supremacy.\n\n*This talk may contain sensitive
  matetials.\n\nRSVP HERE
