Please join us for a workshop with Junior Professor Margit Dahm (Kiel University) entitled, "Female Writers, Female Writing: Markings of Female Textual Production in German-Language Manuscripts"
The workshop addresses the question of female participation in medieval writing, which is explored on the basis of an evaluation of scribal colophons from German-language manuscripts of the Middle Ages. After outlining what information value colophons provide about medieval scribes, the workshop adresses the question of gender-specific information. How did female scribes articulate themselves in a male-dominated writing tradition? What specific strategies have they used to mark the manuscripts for which they were responsible? What conclusions can be drawn from these observations about female professionalism in medieval writing?
The lecture will be followed by a joint reading and discussion of selected colophons written by female writers. By examining these texts for signs of female writing and gender-specific forms of colophon design, the traces of female agency in medieval writing are investigated.
