Event Details:
Join the Department of African and African American Studies (DAAAS) for the Second Annual Art in the City Series. In 2022, we experienced Kehinde Wiley's epic Archeology of Silence Exhibition at the De Young Museum, and this year we will viewing the work of four contemporary African/African American female artists: Rachel Jones, Mary Graham, Mary Lovelace O'Neal, and Zanele Muholi at both the Museum of the African Diaspora (MOAD) & San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA)!
Each artists represents a different aspect of the African Diaspora, and their work covers a wide range of issues related to the Black experience. The excursion will also include an immersive spatial history of the origins of African & African American Studies, which includes a stop at San Francisco State University, the school where a three-year struggle that culminated in yearlong student strike from 1968-1969 resulted in the first African and African American Department in the nation. Museum tickets, transportation, and food (breakfast and early supper) will be generously provided by the DAAAS for all registered participants.
This field trip is free and open to current Stanford students and affiliates, but priority will be given to DAAAS majors and minors, DAAAS grad fellows & Post Docs, and any prospective DAAAS majors. We highly encourage ALL, who are interested to register as there is often space and cancellations. Transportation is provided.
If you require accommodations feel free to contact DAAAS Graduate Student Coordinator, Aliyah Dunn-Salahuddin: salahudd@stanford.edu. Both Museums, SFSU, and International Smoke are ADA compliant, but feel free email in advance to ensure comfort and maximum accessibility.
