Stanford Architecture: Its Beginnings. (Hybrid) Sapp Center for Teaching and Learning (Old Chemistry): As a tribute to Stanford’s architectural and academic roots, the first event will be a talk by architectural historian Paul V. Turner. He will discuss the design of Stanford’s campus beginning in the 1880s, focusing on the collaboration among university founders Leland and Jane Stanford, eminent planner of the era Frederick Law Olmsted, and Boston architect Charles Coolidge. 

3:15 – 3:30 p.m. PST. Intermission and transition from Old Chem to CoDa

3:30 – 4:30 p.m. PST. Arcades to Algorithms. (Hybrid) Following the event at Sapp Center, guests are invited to take a symbolic walk “from the past to the present” by heading next door to the recently inaugurated Computing and Data Science (CoDa) building. In the Simonyi Conference Center, architect Sam Miller, Partner at LMN Architects, will share insights into the building's design. Sapna Marfatia, Stanford’s Director of Architecture, Planning, and Design, will moderate this session.

4:30 – 5:00 p.m. PST. Mix and Mingle: Self-guided tour and light refreshments with nice campus views

Paul V. Turner is the Wattis Professor of Art, Emeritus, in the Department of Art & Art History. He was trained as an architect and architectural historian (Harvard, M.Arch. 1969, Ph.D. 1971) and taught the history of architecture at Stanford from 1971 until his retirement in 2006. His specialties include French and American architecture and the history of the American campus. One of Turner’s main interests is the architecture of Stanford. His publications on that subject include The Founders & the Architects: The Design of Stanford University (1976, reprinted 2025), Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hanna House Restored (1999), Mrs. Hoover’s Pueblo Walls: The Primitive and the Modern in the Lou Henry Hoover House (2004), and numerous articles. His book Frank Lloyd Wright and San Francisco (2016) deals with Wright’s many built and unbuilt projects for the Bay Area.

Sam Miller is the Managing Partner of Seattle-based LMN Architects where he provides practice leadership and guides the firm’s culture of collaboration and innovation. Sam coordinates LMN’s sustainability initiatives, exploring the advancement and integration of sustainable, low carbon design solutions. In addition, he is a leader of LMN Tech Studio, an experimental research and development group empowered to explore digital design technologies and innovative, data-informed approaches to design and fabrication.

Sam’s project work focuses on educational and cultural projects including the Stanford Computing and Data Science Building, the Seattle Central Library; Seattle Art Museum Downtown Expansion; Seattle Asian Art Museum Renovation and Expansion, and the Voxman Music Building at the University of Iowa. Among his current architectural projects are the Stanford Town Center project and the Diego Rivera Theatre in San Francisco. He earned a B.S. degree in civil engineering from Stanford and a M.Arch. from University of Washington.
