Event Details:
French director and screenwriter Julia Ducournau is known for her powerful, unique approach of genre cinema. Titane (2021) is a psychological-body-horror film that centers a young woman who, after being injured in a car crash as a child, has a titanium plate fitted into her head. Amidst an increasingly bizarre series of events, she meets a man in a crisis of paternity, mourning the disappearance of his son.
After its world premiere at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, Titane took home the Palme d’Or, making Ducournau the second woman director to do so, following Jane Campion for The Piano (1993).
Amalia Ulman is an Argentine-Spanish multidisciplinary artist whose practice includes installation, video, performance and net-art works. Her 2019 short, Buyer Walker Rover (Yiwu) offers a perspective on media and global capitalism, depicting a young woman's journey to Yiwu.
As a graduate student-run film collective based in the Department of Art & Art History, Cinematheque advances a dynamic programming effort of film and video for the greater Stanford community. Cinematheque aims to serve as a generative hub of ongoing discovery for current students thinking about film and media across the University as well as a connective link between the University and the broader regional film culture.
