DESCRIPTION:The Stanford Energy Seminar has been a mainstay of energy engag
 ement at Stanford for nearly 20 years and is one of the flagship programs 
 of the Precourt Institute for Energy. We aim to bring a wide variety of pe
 rspectives to the Stanford community – academics\, entrepreneurs\, utili
 ties\, non-profits\, and more. \n\n \n\nAbout the talk\n\nExpanding data c
 enter infrastructure to train and deploy artificial intelligence (AI) mode
 ls is driving a surge in electricity demand in the U.S.\, and associated i
 mpacts for costs\, emissions\, and resource use. The electric infrastructu
 re buildout from this AI growth will influence the capabilities and feasib
 ility of broader electrification. We develop an open-source end-to-end tec
 hno-economic model of energy solutions to power AI infrastructure across t
 he continental U.S. and compare grid-connected and off-grid data center en
 ergy infrastructure using AC-coupled solar and storage\, DC-coupled solar 
 and storage\, behind the meter natural gas\, and conventional grid power a
 cross the continental U.S. To estimate opportunity costs of construction a
 nd equipment delays\, we quantify the deployment speed value of AI data ce
 nters using GPU spot market rental prices. We discuss the technical\, poli
 cy\, and environmental implications of these different pathways to power U
 .S. data centers. \n\nDr. Costa Samaras is the Director of Carnegie Mellon
  University’s Scott Institute for Energy Innovation\, and the Trustee Pr
 ofessor of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He is an affiliated facult
 y member in the Department of Engineering and Public Policy and in the Hei
 nz College of Information Systems and Public Policy. He analyzes how techn
 ologies and policies affect energy and emissions pathways\, security\, cli
 mate resilience\, and economic and equity outcomes. From 2021-2024\, he se
 rved in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) as 
 Principal Assistant Director for Energy\, OSTP Chief Advisor for Energy Po
 licy\, and then OSTP Chief Advisor for the Clean Energy Transition. He was
  previously a Senior National Security Researcher at the RAND Corporation 
 as well as a megaprojects engineer in New York City. He received a joint P
 h.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering and Engineering and Public Pol
 icy from Carnegie Mellon.\n\n \n\nAnyone with an interest in energy is wel
