DESCRIPTION:The Stanford Energy Seminar has been a mainstay of energy engag
 ement at Stanford for nearly 20 years and is one of the flagship programs 
 of the Precourt Institute for Energy. We aim to bring a wide variety of pe
 rspectives to the Stanford community – academics\, entrepreneurs\, utili
 ties\, non-profits\, and more. \n\n \n\nAbout the talk\n\nThis session wil
 l discuss recent trends in atmospheric methane concentrations\, including 
 the causes of record increases over the past five years. We will examine c
 hanges in natural systems\, such as the Arctic and Amazon\, and anthropoge
 nic systems\, including oil and gas. Prof. Jackson will also examine inter
 actions and research priorities of the global hydrogen budget through his 
 group's work in the Global Carbon Project\, and how hydrogen and methane i
 nteract in the atmosphere.\n\n \n\nRob Jackson and his lab examine the man
 y ways people affect the Earth. They produce basic scientific knowledge an
 d use it to help shape policies and reduce the environmental footprint of 
 global warming\, energy extraction\, and other environmental issues. They'
 re currently examining the effects of climate change and drought on old-gr
 owth forests. They are also working to measure and reduce greenhouse gas e
 missions through the Global Carbon Project (globalcarbonproject.org)\, whi
 ch Jackson chairs. Examples of new research Rob leads include establishing
  a global network of methane tower measurements across the Amazon and more
  than 100 sites worldwide and measuring and reducing methane emissions and
  air pollution from oil and gas wells\, city streets\, and homes and build
 ings.\n\nRob's new book on climate solutions\, Into the Clear Blue Sky (Sc
 ribner and Penguin Random House)\, was named a "Top Science Book of 2024" 
 by The Times. As an author and photographer\, Rob has published a previous
  trade book about the environment (The Earth Remains Forever\, University 
 of Texas Press)\, two books of children’s poems\, Animal Mischief and We
 ekend Mischief (Highlights Magazine and Boyds Mills Press)\, and recent or
  forthcoming poems in the journals Southwest Review\, Cortland Review\, Co
 ld Mountain Review\, Atlanta Review\, LitHub\, and more. His photographs h
 ave appeared in many media outlets\, including the NY Times\, Washington P
 ost\, USA Today\, US News and World Report\, Science\, Nature\, and Nation
 al Geographic News.\n\nRob won this year's Blue Planet Prize and is a rece
 nt Djerassi artist in residence\, Guggenheim Fellow\, and sabbatical visit
 or in the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. He is also
  a Fellow in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences\, American Associat
 ion for the Advancement of Science\, American Geophysical Union\, and Ecol
 ogical Society of America. He received a Presidential Early Career Award i
 n Science and Engineering from the National Science Foundation\, awarded a
