The central theme of my KL2 project is defining key biopsychosocial determinants of pain assessment and management that considers both patient and clinician perspectives and how interactions between patients and clinicians influence decisions and outcomes. I am accomplishing this via qualitative interviews of patients, nurses, and physicians to better understand (1) their experience related to pain assessment and management and (2) their perspectives and feedback on the Activity Based Check of Pain - Functional Pain Scale (ABCs). Briefly, this is an infographic-style, modifiable, function-based pain assessment tool. The ABCs has been field-tested in the general surgery, orthopedic surgery, and otolaryngology perioperative setting.
