Climate Politics and the Physics of Law: Time, Friction, and Negotiations through a Climate Justice Lens

Climate justice scholarship not only explores the unique challenges for frontline communities and nation-states, but it also provides a prism through which novel, emergent issues can be anticipated, understood, and equitably resolved. This talk will first look back to the centuries-long relationship between environmental degradation and racial hierarchy to better understand the present and unprecedented challenges that the climate crisis presents. Exploring a range of issues from the halting climate negotiations to climate-related migration, Professor Burkett provides a blueprint for enduring solutions. Drawing from her experience at the State Department, Burkett will also speak not only to the feasibility of more just solutions but also to their necessity in order to build solidarity and maintain the stability of the global community.

The seminar will be in-person in Y2E2 299, Thursday, October 26 from 3:00-4:30 pm. There will not be a hybrid option, but the talk will be recorded for those in the Stanford community who cannot attend in person.
