Dr. Steven L. Shafer served as the Editor-in-Chief of Anesthesia & Analgesia from 2006 to 2016. During this time he was involved in the identification of several cases of serial fraud, including Joachim Boldt (the author with the most retractions for fraud, according to Retraction Watch (https://retractionwatch.com/the-retraction-watch-leaderboard/) and Yoshitaka Fujii, the authors with the second most retractions. Dr. Shafer has also been involved in the retractions for Hironobu Ueshima (the author with the third most retractions), Yuhji Saitoh (number 8 on the list) and Scott Reuben. Dr. Shafer has been a director of the Committee on Publication Ethics, and is currently on the Board of Directors of the Center for Scientific Integrity.
