In recognition of Ms. Magazine’s efforts to put the issue of reproductive justice before the public for 50 years, American Studies is planning a very exciting symposium this spring (May 1, 4pm-5:30) with Ms. Magazine on “The Past and Future of Reproductive Justice in America.”

Kathy Spillar, Executive Editor of Ms. and Executive Director of the Feminist Majority Foundation, will be moderator, and will also speak. The other panelists—a truly distinguished roster of women who are making history—are listed below. The event will also be celebrating the launch of 50 Years of Ms.:The Best of The Pathfinding Magazine which Ignited a Revolution, which just came out this year (and Kathy Spillar will be signing books at a modest reception after the event).

  • Kathy Spillar – Executive Editor of Ms. And Executive Director of the Feminist Majority Foundation
  • Belle Taylor-McGhee – Reproductive justice advocate and reporter for Ms. on abortion bans and ballot measures
  • Dr. Jennifer Conti – Stanford Medical School, Co-founder of Obstetricians for Reproductive Justice
  • Dr. Damla Karsan – Lead plaintiff in the Texas case seeking an exemption from prosecution under the state’s abortion ban, she was scheduled to provide abortion care for Kate Cox, who was forced to flee the state to end a pregnancy that was threatening her life
  • Dr. Lauren Beene – Lead physician in the successful Ohio campaign to secure a state constitutional guarantee for reproductive rights
