DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Jeff Rissman will draw from his new book\, Zero-Carbo
n Industry\, exploring the pathways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in t
he industrial sector. Accounting for a third of global emissions when inclu
ding purchased electricity and heat\, decarbonizing the industrial sector i
s a key part of reaching nations’ net zero targets. The talk will provide a
n overview of emissions and energy use in global industrial sector\, the ke
y technologies that can aid in reducing industrial emissions to zero\, and
discuss the necessary policy frameworks to help commercialize these technol
ogies and deliver them at scale.\n\n \n\nBio: Jeffrey Rissman is Senior Dir
ector\, Industry at Energy Innovation\, where he leads the company’s work o
n technologies and policies to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from the
industry sector. He is the author of Zero-Carbon Industry: Transformative T
echnologies and Policies to Achieve Sustainable Prosperity (2024) and coaut
hor of Designing Climate Solutions: A Policy Guide for Low-Carbon Energy (2
018). In 2024\, Jeffrey was appointed by Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granh
olm to serve on the Department of Energy’s Industrial Technology Innovation
Advisory Committee.\n\nJeff is also the creator of the Energy Policy Simul
ator\, an open-source computer model that quantifies the effects of various
energy and environmental policies in combination\, predicting outputs such
as fuel use\, pollutant emissions\, financial cost or savings\, electric v
ehicle deployment\, power sector structure\, and more. Versions of the simu
lator have been developed for an ever-growing list of countries and regions
\, in partnership with in-country government agencies or NGOs\, accounting
for more than 50 percent of the world’s emissions.\n\nPreviously\, Jeff wor
ked on policies supporting R&D for clean energy and efficiency technologies
for the American Energy Innovation Council\, where he led a survey of 17 R
&D leaders investigating trends\, opportunities\, and challenges to unleash
ing private sector energy R&D.\n\nJeff holds an M.S. in Environmental Scien
ces and Engineering and a Masters in City and Regional Planning\, both from
the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a Research Fellow
for the University of North Carolina Institute for the Environment\, where
he studied aircraft emissions for the Federal Aviation Administration. Jeff
also holds a B.A. in International Relations with honors from Stanford Uni
 versity.\n\n \n\n \n\nMore about the Energy Seminar:\n\nThe Energy Seminar
has been a mainstay of energy engagement at Stanford for nearly 20 years an
d is one of the flagship programs of the Precourt Institute for Energy. We
aim to bring a wide variety of perspectives to the Stanford community – aca
 demics\, entrepreneurs\, utilities\, big businesses\, and more. We're proud
to have hosted some of the biggest names in the energy world as well as th
ose just starting out. \n\nSeminars take place most Mondays during the acad
emic year and typically have an audience of 100+ attendees. Anyone with an
interest in energy is welcome to join one seminar or all of them! You can e
njoy seminars in the following ways:\n\nAttend live. The auditorium may cha
nge quarter by quarter\, so check each seminar event to confirm location. E
