Event Details:
Sara McBride with US Geologic Survey will be addressing the question, "Why drop, cover, and hold on and not evacuate?". Sara's talk will explore personal protective actions for ShakeAlert, the earthquake early warning system for the West Coast of the United States. This earthquake early warning system provides a timely case study for understanding how people receive and respond to early warning messages. Sara will draw on her experiences at the USGS and in the field responding after earthquakes to discuss the role of disaster communication in response. Recently deployed to respond to Hurricane Helene, Sarah will additionally share learnings from her experience in Florida and other social science discussions.
