DESCRIPTION:Democratic backsliders attack not just institutions but the cul
 ture of democracy – the public’s beliefs about the quality and value o
 f their democracies. They try to convince the public that (opposing) polit
 icians are corrupt\, judges are partisan\, bureaucrats are hacks\, newspap
 ers purposely lie – in sum\, that the public sphere is shabby and not mu
 ch is lost if they attack it. But this trash-talking of democracy is uneve
 nly successful. Why does it sometimes fail\, and what do its failures sugg
 est about effective resistance to democratic backsliding? Susan Stokes wil
 l explore these questions with evidence from the US\, Turkey\, Mexico\, an
 d several other countries.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\n\nSusan Stokes is the Tif
 fany and Margaret Blake Distinguished Service Professor of Political Scien
 ce at the University of Chicago and Director of the Chicago Center on Demo
 cracy. She is also a founding member of Bright Line Watch. Her current res
 earch projects are on mechanisms of direct democracy\, and on democratic e
 rosion.
