As a Native American and a woman engineer, Sandra Begay has broken more than one glass ceiling.

Awarded for both her scientific advocacy of renewable energy and for mentoring young women as they grow into their STEM careers, Sandra is a powerful role model for dual-minority professionals.

In her keynote, Sandra will use stories to illustrate what she has overcome and how she has persevered, all while following the Navajo philosophy of “Walking in Beauty” - valuing love, positivity, and spiritual beauty in every interaction.

Sandra Begay is a member of the Navajo Nation and has worked as an engineer at Sandia National Laboratories for 30 years. Sandra earned her MS from Stanford University in Structural Engineering and is featured in the American Society of Civil Engineers book "Changing Our World: True Stories of Women Engineers." Sandra is included in the chapter "Women in Power," describing her research in providing solar electricity to to hundreds of Navajo members, and is the recipient of the 2021 Women in Technology Award from the NM Technology Council. Sandra’s unique work focused on providing technical assistance to U.S. tribes and she is proud to have mentored 44 technical American Indian and Alaska Native college students.
