 ural Research Program\n\n(Visit Website)\n\nDr. Khaliq received his B.A. i
 n Physics from Dartmouth College and his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Northw
 estern University in 2006. During his graduate work with Indira Raman\, he
  studied the initiation and propagation of action potentials in cerebellar
  Purkinje neurons. During his postdoctoral fellowship with Bruce Bean at H
 arvard Medical School\, he studied the ionic mechanisms of firing in dopam
 ine-releasing neurons located in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and subs
 tantia nigra. He joined NINDS as an Investigator in 2011. His laboratory i
 s focused on the cellular and synaptic mechanisms underlying behaviorally 
 relevant firing patterns within the midbrain dopamine system.\n\nInhibitor
 y control of dopaminergic neurons – dendrites\, soma and axons\n\nAbstra
 ct\n\nDopamine-releasing neurons located in the midbrain fire bursts of ac
 tion potentials during reward behaviors but pause their activity in respon
 se to aversive stimuli. This lecture will discuss recent work examining th
 e cellular level mechanisms of these behaviorally relevant firing patterns
 . Specifically\, the lecture will discuss how synaptic inputs arriving fro
 m surrounding basal ganglia nuclei interact with the intrinsic firing prop
 erties of substantia nigra dopaminergic neuron to produce inhibitory pause
 s and rebound firing. The second part of the lecture will cover recent wor
 k examining GABAergic control of the axons of dopaminergic neurons. Dopami
 nergic axons transmit reinforcement signals to the striatum through patter
 ns of propagating action potentials. Within the striatum\, dopamine signal
 s are shaped independently by input arriving from the local striatal circu
 it as well as by receptor-mediated conductances that directly influence ax
 onal excitability and dopamine release. This lecture will discuss the mech
 anisms by which GABAergic receptors shape the subthreshold membrane potent
 ial of dopaminergic axons\, propagated firing\, and ultimately striatal do
