R. Buckminster Fuller First Day of Issue Ceremony

An inventor, architect, engineer, and philosopher, R. Buckminster Fuller has been called one of the most original thinkers that America has produced. This stamp honors Fuller on the 50th anniversary of his patent for the geodesic dome. His lifelong mission was to use technology to solve human problems while protecting the Earth and its resources. With this goal in mind, he invented the geodesic dome, which the American Institute of Architects described as “the strongest, lightest, and most efficient means of enclosing space yet devised.” The stamp features a painting of Fuller by Boris Artzybasheff that originally appeared on the cover of Time magazine. The artist depicted Fuller’s head in the pattern of a geodesic dome surrounded by several of his inventions.
