John Christakos, Founder and CEO of Minneapolis-based Blu Dot, will share work from the company's initial collection to its most current designs, highlighting both successes and failures, as well as the journey of starting a business with three partners and $50,000 of their own savings and growing it into the global enterprise it is today.

The story of Blu Dot provides an interesting contemporary counterpoint to the exhibition Creativity on the Line: Design for the Corporate World, 1950 - 1975 which examines the relationship between designers and their corporate patrons. The three Blu Dot founders, all designers themselves, endeavored to start a company as a means to “feed their habit” rather than rely on corporate sponsors to produce their work.  As a result of living with the consequences of their own design decisions, the work of the Blu Dot studio over the last twenty years is imbued with a deep sense of pragmatism. In an age of “disruptors” and “unicorns”, the Blu Dot founders joke that they are more of a “mule.”
