This talk will take stock of recent developments in postcolonial theory. I will suggest that postcolonial theory is a modern philosophy of renunciation that offers a unique proposal for non-injuriousness as a way of life and as a basis for community.

Leela Gandhi is John Hawkes Professor of Humanities and English at Brown University. She is author of Affective Communities (2006) and The Common Cause (2014). A second edition of her book, Postcolonial Theory is forthcoming from Columbia University Press in 2019. She has taught in India and Australia, with visiting professorships in Denmark, Italy and Iran. Her work is translated into many languages.
